Nature

In the wide waters of the Oosterschelde live two remarkable residents: the common seal and the grey seal. At Neeltje Jans you can simply admire them from the shore; you do not even need binoculars.

Common seal: recognisable by its round head and gentle gaze. This species is slightly smaller and the most common in the Oosterschelde.

Grey seal: larger and sturdier, with a long snout that is reminiscent of a dog. They are a bit more assertive and stand out for their powerful build.

At low tide both species like to rest on the mussel farming installations in the refuge harbour of Neeltje Jans. Sometimes dozens lie sunbathing. Keep your eyes open: every encounter feels like a small gift from nature.
