Zierikzee is the historic heart of Schouwen-Duiveland, about 20 kilometres from the holiday home. Around the old harbour you will find three city gates, the Sint-Lievensmonstertoren (the 'Fat Tower') and many listed buildings. It is a town to explore on foot: most sights are close together.
What to do
- In summer climb the Sint-Lievensmonstertoren (62 m) for a view over the town and the Oosterschelde.
- Walk past the three surviving city gates: Nobelpoort, Noordhavenpoort and Zuidhavenpoort.
- See the Town Hall with its museum, and 's Gravensteen on the Mol.
- Stroll along the Museumhaven Zeeland with its historic ships and sit on a terrace at the harbour.
- See the mills De Hoop (1850) and Den Haas (1727).
Practical
- Market day is Thursday on the Havenplein; the Paardenmarkt (horse market) takes place in early June.
- Zierikzee has no railway station; by car or bike is the quickest way.
- Check the opening hours of the tower and museums beforehand.
